This is my eleventh year at NUUC, and in all that time, one of the great constants has been Nathan Hamm on the piano. Indeed, as I wrote that last sentence it even felt odd to use “NUUC” “Nathan” and “piano” in different parts of the same sentence, so naturally do they blend together in my mind. But alas, Nathan Hamm, whose first musical appearance before this congregation was two decades ago, will be leaving us at the end of August in order to become Pianist for the First UU Church in Clintonville.
You know what Nathan has done for the musical life of this congregation. You know the kind of talent, heart and soul he has given us through his music. But today I find myself thinking most about Nathan the person, the member of this community. Did you know that Nathan sometimes sneaks in playing Ravel’s “Pavane to a Dead Princess” when he thinks I could use a pick me up, just because he knows and remembers I like it? And how about the time he played some music especially designed to promote energy and healing right before I faced a Question Box Sermon? I am sure many of you have similar stories. Nathan is an outstanding human being, and we will miss his presence among us.
Of course, we reserve the right to be proud of him and to continually claim him as our own. Towards this end, please be sure to join me and Nathan at a reception in his honor after the service on August 12. Be there.
To Life!
Susan
