Call to Action:

GOING BEYOND FUNDRAISING

Hi, I'm Sarabeth Mahusky-Petras, your NUUC Annual Budget Drive Chair and I want to make it clear that I hate to ask people for money. It makes me uncomfortable. I am afraid I will embarrass myself. I am afraid I will alienate the person I am asking money from. Even as a kid I dreaded fund raising. My introverted soul shudders to think of the countless Girl Scout cookie sales I was forced to participate in. I loathed selling band candy for my high school marching band, especially since I was last chair in the flute section. Don't even get me started on selling fruitcake (yes, fruitcake) every year for Rainbow Girls. And of course now there are the two schools my children attend that are always asking us to sell something. Then there are the countless organizations which we belong to which ask us to solicit donations for their annual silent auctions. So you might ask why in the world did I volunteer to co-chair for the past two years and now chair this coming year’s Annual Budget Drive for NUUC.

Why? Well, I could say it is because this community means so much to me. It offers me friendships, opportunities to share my music, a welcoming home for my children, a place to sort out the God of my childhood and to seek spiritual renewal in an open loving environment. But these things are not really enough to take me beyond my fears of asking for money.

Why? Because three years ago following NUUC's Annual Budget Drive, our congregation was left feeling there was no way we were going to have enough money to make it through the next fiscal year. We were mired in a culture of scarcity.  I remember sitting in services with David and we turned to one another and committed ourselves to volunteer to co-chair the next Annual Budget Drive. To put it in religious language I felt “called“ to volunteer. It was time to transform our congregation from a culture of scarcity to a culture of abundance; to a belief in the reality that there can always be enough.

So how does one go from a culture of scarcity to a culture of abundance? Let us start by embracing a new way of speaking about giving and receiving. The first part of building a culture of abundance is the need for a new vocabulary, one that emphasizes what we have instead of what we don't, that promotes gracious receiving as well as joyful giving. We have moved closer to this culture of abundance but now we need to go beyond fund raising and move towards the concept of stewardship.

Stewardship is the growing, nurturing, promoting and building of our gifts (aptitudes, abilities, and money), our call (willingness to proclaim the congregation's spiritual message), and our spiritual vocation (willingness to take up volunteer efforts to support the faith community). Stewardship is not necessarily the things people do, but the spirit that influences the things they do. Stewardship is an act of worship that addresses people's need to give.

So for the next few weeks as we move towards our annual budget drive, you will be hearing lots of new language and vocabulary. While change is frightening, not changing can be even more so. As we embrace a new sense of Stewardship and the culture of abundance, we will do so together. I am excited about this change and I hope you enjoy and welcome this move towards a culture of abundance and joyous giving with me.

A Special Appeal for UU Church of Blanchard Valley in Findlay, OH

Our sister OMD congregation, the UU Church of the Blanchard Valley, in Findlay, OH, was heavily damaged by the recent floods in that part of the state. They lost their piano, sound system, chairs, all of their RE curricula, books, and supplies in the flood waters.

As noted elsewhere in this newsletter, NUUC will be taking up a special offering during our Ingathering service on Sunday, September 9. Or, you may send a donation directly to the church at any time.

If you can help with a donation of funds or in-kind materials, please contact:

Rev. Beth Marshall
UUBeth@aol.com
Cell: 419-889-9974
Home: 419-422-8042

Checks should be made out to “UU Church of Blanchard Valley” and sent to:
Rev. Beth Marshall
400 Hillcrest Ave.
Findlay, OH 45840

Please note that Rev. Marshall's phone is being used as the primary way to contact the church during this time. The old church phone number no longer works.

I'm told that the congregation was able to save their pulpit, chalice, most of their hymnals, and the coffee pots. (Rev. Marshall says she finds a bit of ironic humor in the fact that the coffee pots were salvageable.)

Rev. Marshall also notes that her congregation deeply appreciates any assistance you can give. She said: "It's easy to feel isolated out here, and yet I know that there are good colleagues and congregations out there we can depend upon."

Thank you all for your help in this time of need.

Blessings,

Joan VanBecelaere
OMD District Executive

2007 NUUC Service / Silent Auction

Mark your calendars for the NUUC Auction, Sunday, September 30 immediately following worship and refreshments.

By donating services and/or items you can provide, and bidding on those offered by other members, you can help raise money for the church while also getting opportunities to meet people you may not already know. And we are fortunate that once again Tony Marconi will serve as our esteemed (and entertaining) auctioneer.

Start thinking about what you would like to offer this year and keep an eye out for donation forms in the orders of service and in Fellowship Hall during the month of September. Or, click here to view and print a donation form.

If you have any questions, including about what you bought or donated at last year's auction that may still be outstanding, contact Lynn or John Foreman, either by email (sbgmacb@hotmail.com) or phone (740-513-4876).

Thanks to the generosity of this congregation, a trunk FULL of school supplies for students served by Delaware County Juvenile Probation Services was delivered on August 20. During the four week collection period at church, we received donations of supplies and cash (totaling $410). Among the "goodies" delivered were 26 new backpacks, 200 pencils, 175 pens, 80 spiral notebooks, 10 3-ring binders, and 30 packages of filler paper!
