The North Unitarian Universalist Congregation Newsletter January 2008

Call to Action:

Social Action “In Action”

Got Coins??  Want to get rid of that loose change and have your money go to a good cause?  Your Social Action Committee will be collecting your loose change during service on Jan. 13th and on the second Sunday of each month throughout the year.  Monies collected will be distributed to Social Action causes at some point during 2008.  This is a new idea to the congregation so we will keep you all posted on our progress and give the congregation a year end report on the money that was raised and how that money was distributed.

If you have questions please feel free to contact Yvonne Clippinger yclippin@columbus.rr.com or Launia White launia@columbus.rr.com , your Social Action co-chairs.

Guest at Your Table Invitation

Your Social Action Committee gives your family the opportunity to welcome (figuratively) a guest at your table from Sunday, January 27, to Sunday, February 24. What is "Guest at Your Table”?  It is a program of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee which has been celebrated by UU communities each year since 1975 as a means of educating members about UUSC and raising funds for their programs. Emphasis is on families learning together at the dining table how we put UU values to work "...to serve humanity...," as we affirm each Sunday morning.

What is UUSC?  The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a nonsectarian organization that promotes human rights and social justice worldwide. Its programs are based on UU principles that affirm the worth, dignity, and human rights of every person. UUSC partners with grassroots organizations to support programs that empower women, defend children's rights, and aid the struggles of indigenous people and oppressed racial and ethnic groups. It also provides financial and technical support when disasters strike impoverished areas. UUSC is guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. It is an associate member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, but receives no general financial support from the UUA.

What are the programs of UUSC?  UUSC focuses on four major program areas:

Advancing economic justice -- by defending workers' rights and supporting living wage campaigns and fair trade practices;

Promoting environmental justice -- by promoting and defending the human right to water;

Defending civil liberties and democratic processes -- by supporting due process of law, freedom from torture, and rights to privacy - freedoms under attack in our post-September 11 world;

Responding to humanitarian crises -- in natural and human-caused disasters, such as that in the Darfur region of Sudan.

You will hear more about these programs on January 27 and the following Sundays.

So what can I, as a member or friend of NUUC, do?  Participate in our Guest at Your Table program and be an agent of change in troubled areas at home and abroad.
