Social
Action… in Action Got Coins??
Want to get rid of that loose change and have your money go to a good
cause? Your Social Action Committee will be collecting your loose
change during service on Feb. 10 and on the second Sunday of each month
throughout the year. Monies collected will be distributed to Social
Action causes at some point during 2008. This is a new idea to the
congregation; the committee will report to the congregation on the progress
and outcome of the project. On a related note, in
December 2007 the Social Action Committee donated $100 to the Homeless
Families Foundation and $600 to Delaware County People in Need in the name of
NUUC. Please see the letters of acceptance that are posted on the
bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. If you have questions
about these or other social action matters, please contact Yvonne Clippinger yclippin@columbus.rr.com
or Launia White launia@columbus.rr.com , your
Social Action co-chairs. Guest
at Your Table The Social Action
Committee invites your family to welcome (figuratively) a guest at your table
during the month of February. Kick-off
for the 33-year-old program of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee
will be during the service on Sunday, February 3. The UUSC works to educate UU congregations
about and raise funds for their programs, which focus on advancing economic
justice, promoting environmental justice, defending civil liberties and
democratic processes, and responding
to humanitarian crises. Please
consider participating in this month’s “Guest at Your Table” program and be
an agent of change in troubled areas at home and abroad. Nominating Committee Seeking New Board
Members Have
you ever considered serving on NUUC’s Board of Trustees? Do you know of someone who would make a
good addition to the Board? The
Nominating Committee is currently compiling a list of those interested in
serving on the Board. Terms are for
three years; monthly meetings are held the 3rd Saturday morning of
each month. The candidates will be
voted upon by the NUUC membership at its upcoming Annual Meeting in
March. To submit your nomination,
please contact Gaylord Odegaard at lodegaard@columbus.rr.com
or Lori Torriero at joelori@sbcglobal.net
as soon as possible. Art Wanted! If you have or
know of art work you would like to see displayed in the sanctuary, please let
Rev. Ritchie know (RevRitchie@aol.com)

Getting Greener…Can You Help? This
year, I want to become "Greener."
More ecologically friendly. I
want to "reduce my carbon footprint." I want to do whatever I can to ensure that
this Earth and its' environment are still doing OK when my
great-great-grandchildren are playing in the back yard. I've been recycling for years, but this
year I'm taking a long, hard look at the question: " What Else Can I
Do?" I've already decided
upon a few things: ·
I'm going to http://www.41pounds.org/ to reduce the
amount of mail I have to recycle in the first place. (Thank you Susan, for
that tip!) ·
I've started
buying fruit gummies and animal crackers in bulk and portioning them into
reusable containers instead of purchasing those conveniently-sized single-use
individual snack packs. ·
I'm trying to
figure out what other foods I can buy in bulk or from the drygoods section of
my stores to reduce the amount of packaging I'm buying with my food. ·
I'm planning to
work my brother's garden with him to grow more of my own food, and find those
farmer's markets for the things I can't grow. I
know I need to be realistic, too: If I go "over the top," my new habits
won't stick and I'll have that huge "footprint" anyways. I need to think of small changes as well as
large ones, so I'm asking your help: What do you do to be "green"? What have you learned that you can share
with others to help us all learn to be a little bit friendlier to our
planet? Whether you have advice on
shopping for a hybrid car, gardening tips, have found a really good farmer's
market, or just know some good organizations to help make this a greener
place to live, I want to know! Email me
at sillygirlq@gmail.com with your tips,
and I'll publish them in the newsletter to share with the congregation. Together we can be much "Greener"
than we ever could alone. Rebecca
