The younger children are with us for the first part of worship, and the sixth graders and up for the whole service, as we introduce this month’s theme in worship and religious education, “Belonging.” As this is also the period of the Jewish High Holidays, we discuss the questions of inspiration versus appropriation: what is our proper relation to traditions and cultures that we find attractive, but to which we do not belong?
