Our Experiments in Truth

The fourth principle of the congregations belonging to the Unitarian Universalist Association asks us to “affirm and promote the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”  On this Fourth of July weekend, we explore the connection between “free” and “truth” by looking into the life and work of one of the most important (and sadly neglected) figures in early American democracy—the Unitarian minister, chemist, and political theorist Joseph Priestley.  In the process, we’ll discover why our faith stresses the connection between freedom and truth not just in science, but in theology and politics, and how this perspective offers insights into contemporary events from the Jan. 6 hearings to the defeat of Roe v. Wade.
