March 20, 2020
Dear NUUC Members and Friends,
We so sincerely hope that this finds you coping well in these difficult new times. If you are experiencing any special difficulty, or if you know someone who is, please reach out to email@example.com. In the meantime, even those of us who are getting by need opportunities now more than ever for seeing and hearing from one another, and grounding ourselves spiritually. Here’s our current list of ways to stay in touch.
How to Connect: For now, all our connections and gatherings will be through the Zoom Video Conference Platform. If you are not familiar with Zoom, please don’t be intimidated! It is not difficult and Zoom always has the option of simply dialing in using a regular phone. All the connection information for Zoom is Below. Also, we have two church members who are willing to walk you through the zoom process. You can contact either Morgan Patten at 614-364-1539 or Imri Kempker at firstname.lastname@example.org
Connect: Virtual Worship Every Sunday at 10:30 AMLast week we had an excellent attendance with fifty different households attending. Until this crisis abates, we will have virtual worship every Sunday using the Zoom Video Conferencing Platform. If you haven’t used zoom, don’t worry, it is easy, and there is an option to connect without video simply by dialing your phone. See Zoom Connection notes below. If you can, have a candle or a chalice on hand to light at home during the worship.
Connect: Chalice Connection Circle Every Wednesday at Noon Until the crisis abates, Rev. Susan will hold a weekly Zoom Video Conferencing “Chalice Connection Circle” (details for the zoom Connection are below). This will be an opportunity to ground ourselves with a meditation, and then have time for extended check ins with each other, to see how we are navigating these brand-new waters, and to discuss any new matters of community concern.
Connect: Children’s Fellowship Time This Sunday, staring at 11:30 AM (which will likely be about ten minutes after the close of worship), we will leave the worship zoom connection open and invite our
Connect: Youth Fellowship Time Our Youth will be gathering this Sunday evening, at 8:00 PM to share conversation and to check in with each other.
Connect: Recorded Worship Beginning Monday March 23, a video recording of the previous Sunday’s worship will be available to NUUC members only via a password. Go to the www.nuuc.org website, and then hit the menu tab for “worship” and then “past worship services.” For the password, write to email@example.com
Connect: The Fight to Vote: video and discussion As we all learn how to practice responsible social distancing, it’s more important than ever that we’re connecting and supporting one another. We are all in this together. That’s why we are hosting an online video and discussion on March 29, from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm, starting after online Sunday service We will be viewing and discussing the video “Suppressed: The Fight To Vote.” This new documentary from Brave New Films paints an undeniable picture of voter suppression in the 2018 Georgia midterm election where Stacey Abrams fought to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. The issues Georgians faced included polling place closures, voter purges, missing absentee ballots, extreme wait times and a host of voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented many students and people of color from casting their ballots. This documentary speaks to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses in 2020. The video exposes how the basic constitutional right to vote continues to be under siege in America. After viewing online, we will discuss how we can all prepare to meet these same threats here in Ohio in the lead up to the 2020 elections in Ohio. This discussion will be facilitated by Revs. Chris Jones-Leavy and Joan Van Becelaere.
Connect: Ask a Nurse Practitioner NUUC Board member and retired nurse practitioner Bonnie Beardslee is kindly making herself available to answer questions you might have that are not serious or urgent enough for your primary health care provider. You can reach her at firstname.lastname@example.org or 614-401-7133
Connect: Religious Education Resources for Home UseYesterday, during our first virtual worship, our Director of Religious Education referred to the “Soul Matters” religious education resources for home use. You can locate those materials by clicking here.
Online OfferingYour board of trustees voted last week to continue to pay all our employees, including our hourly childcare providers, as a if we were operating normally. We do this out of our deep commitments to mitigating the economic sufferings attendant to this crisis. And yet this is a leap of faith as we anticipate our offerings to fall behind without a weekly in person collection. Please help us meet our commitments by taking your giving online-click here to donate.
How to Connect to Zoom: You don’t have to join zoom to participate in a zoom call either with your computer, or just by phone. To participate by your computer, all you must do is click on the internet link (below). If you are new to zoom, you might want to do this at least 5-10 minutes ahead of the meeting time, as zoom will direct you to download its software, and give you the opportunity to do a self-test of your video and audio. I strongly recommend you do the self-test to make sure both your camera, microphone, and speakers or headset are working properly. If you or would prefer not to use a computer, or if you don’t have a reliable internet connect, you can just dial in as directed on any phone and participate via audio. Let me know if you have any questions. If you’d like to practice ahead of time, you can join a test meeting here:https://zoom.us/test
