Why is “God” a Jerk?

NUUC member and seminary graduate Pete Kelley addresses the classical theological problem of theodicy–or, why is there evil in the world?

Pete Kelley’s journey of service began early, rooted in their upbringing within the United Church of Christ, where a distinct calling to help and care for others emerged during high school. He/They pursued this calling through their studies at Heidelberg College, earning a Bachelor’s of Science with a focus in Religion, and later at Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO), earning a  Master of Divinity with a focus on Chaplaincy. His practical experience included valuable chaplaincy internships at a long-term care facility Willowbrook Village and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. While life circumstances led to a change in their vocational path away from ordination, Pete remained committed to his core mission, returning to MTSO to complete a second Master’s degree, this one in Counseling. Today, they continue their impactful work, providing vital support and care as both a licensed counselor and until recently an adjunct crisis mental health care provider.
