The Veil Lifted: Universalism and the Legacy of Spiritualism

In the flickering candlelight of 19th-century parlors, Universalists gathered not only to preach the gospel of boundless love—but to listen for the voices of the departed. Spiritualism, with its séances and spirit circles, was more than a cultural curiosity; it was a theological experiment born of grief, hope, and radical openness. In this service we’ll ask: What drew so many Universalists to spiritualism? Was it the promise of empirical proof of the afterlife? The democratization of revelation through young women mediums? Or the millennial dream that spiritual wisdom might guide humanity into a new era of justice and peace? And what might this history offer us today? In an age of disconnection and doubt, can we reclaim the spiritualist impulse in our willingness to listen deeply, to honor mystery, and to believe that love transcends death?
